A new study published in the journal BMJ showed that high consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages increased the incidence of mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) among people with diabetes. The researchers from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health advised that cutting down on sweetened beverages like sodas, fruit punch, and lemonade will reduce the risk of premature death.

In the study, the researchers used the data collected from 9,252 women and 3,519 men, all of whom had been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes at baseline or at some point during the study. The findings of the study showed that every additional daily serving of sugar-sweetened drinks was linked to an 8% increase in all-cause mortality.

However, the researchers also observed that drinking beverages like coffee, tea, low-fat cow milk, and plain water was associated with a lower risk of premature death. The results also showed that replacing a daily serving of sugar-sweetened beverages with one serving of coffee was associated with an 18% and 20% lower risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality, respectively.

Similarly, replacing a daily serving of sugar-sweetened beverages with tea resulted in a 16% and 24% lower risk of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality, respectively, followed by plain water with a 16% and 20% lower risk and low-fat cow milk with a 13% and 19% lower risk.
